Taryn opened her eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. One-thirty-nine. Two hours since she'd climbed out of the hot bath and slipped between the satin sheets. Two hours of tossing and turning, of seeing Luke's face every time she closed her eyes.

The more she thought about it, the more she realized Luke had been right. Offering himself up to Sorensen wouldn’t have helped. In fact, it could have made matters much worse.

She supposed she'd have to call Luke in the morning and apologize. But right now, she had to get some sleep. Sliding out of bed, she padded to the bathroom. She grimaced when she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror. Dark shadows circled her eyes; her skin was wan, colorless. The abrasions on her neck had scabbed over, long red scratches reaching below the neckline of her nightgown.

Opening the medicine cabinet, she reached in and took out the small brown plastic bottle of sleeping pills she'd bought the year before. She'd never given in and taken any of them, though.

For several moments, she held two blue pills in the palm of her hand. She wanted to sleep. Needed to sleep. Taking a couple of sleeping pills once wasn’t going to turn her into an addict, so why was it so difficult for her to take them? Giving up control? Probably.

She dropped the pills back into the bottle and put it back on the shelf in the medicine cabinet.
